Beware of the danger at crossroads!

Anyone who drives through Texas on a regular basis understands the meaning of busy roads and heavy traffic. There are many dangers out there for even the most cautious motorists. A particular risk involves any and all intersections as these crossroads are often scenes of serious motor vehicle collisions. There can be quite a lot going on at an average intersection, including cars stopping at red lights or stop signs, pedestrians navigating crosswalks, and perhaps even bicyclists, tractor-trailers or other travelers converging, adding to the challenge of safe driving.

It would be nice if there were a way to keep every person safe. The reality is, however, this is not always possible due to a variety of factors, including reckless or negligent drivers who are on the roads.

Practical ideas for intersection safety

Although no plan is full-proof, keeping the following things in mind when approaching an intersection might help you avoid disaster:

  • Just because you see another driver, does not mean that driver sees you.
  • Even if you have the green light or right-of-way, it's always best to proceed with caution, as many accidents are caused by cross-traffic when drivers fail to yield the right-of-way or are otherwise negligent behind the wheel.
  • Not every pedestrian adheres to traffic signals. Drivers who remain alert and keep their eyes peeled for foot travelers increase their chances of avoiding collisions.
  • Intersections are not choice locations for lane changes. Many accidents occur when drivers suddenly switch lanes and side-swipe other vehicles.

Some intersections are even more dangerous than others if they're not equipped with traffic signals. In the past, some who have been involved in car accidents have said the speed limits posted at particular intersections were way too high, posing safety risks to all who share the road. Even if you are alert and prepared to react as best you can, a drunk driver or someone else not following the rules of the road may still catch you off guard.

Even a minor collision can result in severe injury. If this has happened to you and you have been hit with undue financial strain due to medical bills or have missed work that has led to the loss of income, you are not alone. In fact, these types of consequences are not uncommon for those injured through the fault of other motorists. In the past, many have been able to resolve their financial problems by filing personal injury lawsuits in Texas civil courts against those deemed responsible.
