TxDOT wants drivers to be on the lookout for motorcyclists

As we head toward the days of summer in the Lone Star State, many Texas motorcyclists are looking forward to spending many hours in the saddle. But as we know, there are numerous hazards to look out for while riding, including careless or distracted drivers. So, in an effort to get motorists to take greater care in looking out for those on two wheels, the Texas Department of Transportation has launched a motorcycle safety campaign.

The theme of the campaign is "Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles." In all likelihood, most motorcyclists will share the sentiment of this slogan. And the sad fact is, Texas has seen far too many motorcycle tragedies. In 2015 alone, 455 riders lost their lives on the state's roadways. In addition, 1,867 riders suffered serious injuries in motorcycle accidents.

On its website, TxDOT reminds readers that because motorcycles are comparatively small, motorists may perceive them as being far away or not traveling as fast as they actually are. And as such, it is easy to misjudge their proximity. There are other factors, such as heavy traffic and distracted driving, that have contributed to fatal collisions.

TxDOT also offers drivers such recommendations as checking mirrors before changing lanes, using turn signals and giving motorcycles plenty of following distance to help keep riders safe.

Unfortunately, in spite of TxDOT's efforts, motorcyclists will likely continue to be very vulnerable to the actions of negligent drivers. And as the statistics bear out, motorcycle collisions will continue to leave riders with serious injuries.

If you or someone in your family has suffered harm in a motorcycle accident, it is very important to get a level of compensation that covers both immediate medical needs as well as future costs for care and treatment. Having an experienced personal injury attorney on your side may help you receive a fair settlement from insurance companies.
