Negligent drivers can make flash floods more dangerous

Houston is a wonderful city to live in. However, the roads and highways can get congested and as such, defensive driving is always advisable. And sometimes circumstances can arise that demand extra care when behind the wheel. For instance, when weather conditions become extreme, it is vital to take the proper precautions to avoid danger.

If Houston roadways have one serious flaw, it is their tendency to flood very quickly when the heavy rains hit. As its name implies, a flash flood can develop very quickly, and how you respond to the sudden dangers can greatly impact your ability to arrive at your destination safely.

First, understand that recent statistics indicate that the vast majority of flash flood-related deaths typically occurred in vehicles. Such deaths can be caused by drivers underestimating the hazards inherent in floods. So, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Most passenger vehicles, even pickups and SUVs, can be carried away by 2 feet of surging water.
  • It takes only a foot of water to cause many vehicles to float.
  • A mere 6 inches of water could cause a car to stall or lose control.

Therefore, it is best to refrain from driving through water if you are unsure of its depth. The National Weather Service offers the simple advice of "turn around, don't drown."

All drivers are responsible not only for their own safety but the safety of others with whom they share the road. And in flash flood conditions, a negligent driver could endanger others by driving too fast for the conditions. The driver may spray water on the windshield of another vehicle, thereby seriously impairing the other driver's visibility. Or a speeding driver could lose control of the vehicle and cause a collision. A reckless driver could even rear-end a halted vehicle, sending it into deep or rushing water.

If you are ever involved in a flash flood related car accident which was caused by a negligent driver, you could need the assistance of an experienced motor vehicle attorney. The attorney could investigate the accident and help you compile the evidence you need to pursue a settlement from insurance companies or the liable party.
