Dangers of distracted driving subject of TXDOT campaign

In April, the Texas Department of Transportation actively participates in National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. TXDOT has chosen "Talk/Text CRASH" as the name of its campaign to help alert the public to the dangers of driving while distracted. The hope is that the campaign will inspire Texans to refrain from using their cell phones while behind the wheel.

There is good reason to dedicate an entire month to educating people about the dangers of distracted driving. According to statistics on the TXDOT website, the overall number of accidents related to distracted driving jumped six percent between the years 2013 and 2014. In fact, 2014 saw a total of 100,825 such crashes. And perhaps most dismaying is that these totally preventable accidents accounted for 3,214 serious injuries as well as 468 fatalities.

These sobering numbers underscore the very serious risks inherent in driving while distracted. And while many people may primarily associate distracted driving with cell phone use, there are many other activities that can pull a driver's focus from the matter at hand. Looking at a GPS, eating, personal grooming or tuning the radio are all things that can cause a driver to avert his or her eyes from the road.

Of all the numbers cited by TXDOT, it is the 486 distracted-driving related deaths that really stand out. There is no way to truly measure the collective grief suffered by the families who lost loved ones in those accidents. And sadly, it is likely that more families will have to contend with similar losses in the future.

If you should lose a loved one in a distracted driving-related accident, you may have the basis for a wrongful death lawsuit against the responsible party. A Texas personal injury attorney can assess your case and help you decide the course you may wish to take in pursuing appropriate compensation to help you recover on a financial level.
