Drugged driving becoming more problematic

The dangers of drinking and driving are well-known. Every year in Texas, many lives are lost or irreparably altered due the actions of drunk drivers. While the financial cost of such devastation can be calculated and assigned a number, the emotional cost to the victims and their families can never be truly accounted for.

And yet, in spite of the efforts of law enforcement and activist groups, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the problem persists. Sadly, in some ways, it is even getting worse. This is because at present we are seeing the emergence of drugged driving.

There is a wide variety of drugs, both legal and illegal that people are consuming. These drugs include over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, recreational drugs and hard narcotics. Combining such drugs with alcohol is known as "poly-use," and unfortunately, some people who engage in this practice are getting behind the wheel and causing accidents.

How prevalent is drugged driving? Currently, there is no way to tell because the states are not keeping consistent data sets tracking the problem. So while we do have data for drunk driving, the same cannot be said for drugged driving.

However, drugged driving, just like drunk driving, is an act of negligence and those who do it and cause accidents should be held accountable. Serious accidents can leave victims in need of expensive hospitalization and treatment. The burden caused by a drugged driving accident is often carried by the victim's family who must sacrifice to care for their loved one.

If you are suffering as a result of a drugged or drunk driving accident, a Texas personal injury attorney may be able to help you get the recompense you need and deserve. The attorney can act on your behalf to help maximize an insurance settlement. If the circumstances warrant, the attorney could also help you prepare a civil suit against the party responsible for causing the accident.
