Houston plagued by fatalities caused by running of red lights

Without a doubt, Houston is one of the greatest cities in the United States. We have a thriving arts community, two major universities, some terrific teams to root for and even a NASA space facility. But while Houston leads the way in so many areas on a national level, there is one area in which we can use improvement; traffic safety at red lights.

According to statistics released by the National Coalition for Safer Roads, from the period starting in 2004 and running to 2013, Houston led all other U.S. cities in fatalities caused by the running of red lights. The city was tops in this inauspicious category by a wide margin. During the time mentioned above period, Houston experienced 181 red-light related deaths. The runner-up was Phoenix, Arizona, which saw 127 such fatalities.

It is hard to say why Houston is so especially plagued with this problem, but the statistics also bear out that red-light running is an issue nationwide. In fact, in 2013 alone, there were at least 697 deaths and around 127,000 injuries attributed to running of red lights.

There are many reasons why someone would run a red light, including being in a hurry, being distracted or being impaired. However, there are no excuses for committing such an act. Driving through a red light is easily one of the most dangerous things a motorist can do. Sadly, it happens far too frequently and the consequences are often tragic.

If a member of your family has been killed or seriously injured by a negligent driver who ran a red light, the emotional burden you now carry is likely made even worse by the economic challenges the accident has created. As such, you may wish to contact a Houston personal injury attorney. The attorney could help you explore your options for compensation that can be used to defray the monetary costs of your loss.
