Is there a connection between truck driver health and accidents?

We all know that to feel our best, we need to get plenty of rest, have a healthy diet and get some exercise. If we are unable to do these things, we may suffer from a number of physical maladies including high blood pressure and fatigue.

So much of our ability to live a healthy lifestyle is contingent on our personal circumstances. Unfortunately, some people have circumstances that may make it difficult to take the steps necessary to stay in good physical shape.

Often, commercial truck drivers must contend with working conditions that are less than ideal for maintaining good health. The drivers are often under pressure to keep on tight delivery schedules, meaning they often work long hours while under great stress. All of these factors can contribute to high blood pressure as well as fatigue.

According to a study published in the pages of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the occupational and personal conditions endured by truck drivers can contribute to the likelihood of being involved in accidents.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that truck drivers are involved in around 250,000 accidents annually. Of those accidents, it is likely that many are related to driver fatigue. However, truck drivers may be able to counter their fatigue simply by obeying federal regulations and taking required rest breaks.

A driver who is involved in an accident after failing to adhere to the regulations may be held liable for damages. Likewise, a truck driver's employer may also share in culpability, especially if that company in some way coerced the driver to forgo taking his or her breaks.

If you have been in a truck accident and believe that truck driver fatigue may have been a factor, you may wish to take the matter to a personal injury attorney. The attorney may be able to conduct an investigation that helps to clarify liability.
