Statistics demonstrate dangers of holiday driving in Texas

Ready or not, we are rapidly approaching the holiday season. With Thanksgiving coming in November, followed by Christmas and New Year's around a month later, it is a sure bet that many Texans have plans to visit with friends and relatives. And it is having the opportunity to spend time with the one's we love that makes this time of the year so special.

But the holidays are also a time for being careful when traveling by automobile. Statistics published on the Texas Department of Transportation's website bear out just how dangerous travel can be on the state's roadways during the holidays. In 2014, the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holiday periods saw a combined total of 121 fatal crashes and 135 fatalities. The deadliest single day occurring during any holiday period was the Sunday after Thanksgiving, during which there were 18 fatal crashes and 19 fatalities.

The intent of this post is not to discourage holiday travel, but rather to simply point out that we should all proceed with caution as we use the roads during this otherwise very festive time of the year.

Yet sadly, there will likely be more fatal motor vehicle accidents during this year's holiday season. The loss of a loved one in a fatal accident can present a family with seemingly overwhelming challenges. Some of these challenges will be financial in nature. There are immediate costs, such as funeral expenses. There are also long-term costs, such as the loss of household income if the deceased was a family breadwinner.

A Texas motor vehicle accident attorney may be able to help a family who is struggling to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. While money cannot make up for the emotional impact caused by the loss, the compensation that an attorney may be able to help secure could provide a measure of financial security for the family.
