What should I look for when choosing a motorcycle helmet?

Riding a motorcycle around Houston can be fun, but challenging. There are some scenic routes you can take for pleasure rides, but there also many congested thoroughfares. Motorcyclists are so physically vulnerable that they must always keep an eye out for potential dangers. It is all too easy for an unexpected hazard to cause a rider to take a serious spill.

Therefore, it behooves motorcyclists to take precautions that can help lessen the severity of injuries should they be in an accident. One thing riders can do is wear protective gear. And perhaps the most important and effective piece of gear is a good helmet. But go into any store that sells motorcycle accessories and the shelves are filled with helmets of all styles and colors. So, which one should you choose? Well, when picking out a helmet, you may want to consider the following criteria:

  • The style of the helmet. There are three primary styles of helmets: shorty, full coverage, and open face. Each offers its own level of protection.
  • How well the helmet fits. You want a helmet that fits snugly on your head, but not so tight as to cause discomfort.
  • The helmet's safety rating. Prior to issuing a helmet certification, the U.S. Department of Transportation puts it through extensive lab testing. It is best to choose a helmet that has a DOT sticker indicating it meets important safety standards.

Wearing a good helmet could prove extremely important if you are ever involved in a collision while riding a motorcycle. But a helmet can only do so much. Unfortunately, the roads have far too many motorists who drive while distracted or fatigued. If such a driver should ever strike you or run you off the road, you could end up suffering catastrophic injuries.

Should you ever be involved in a motorcycle accident that was due to the acts of a negligent driver, an experienced attorney may be able to aid in your pursuit of fair compensation.
