New system could reduce drunk driving

In Texas, innumerable families are devastated each year by accidents on the roads, all too many of which are caused by drunk drivers. Whether they do not realize they are intoxicated, or they have simply chosen to disregard the law, these drivers put everyone else on the road at risk. Sadly, their intoxication can make them even more likely to make a mistake while driving, and it is often innocent people who pay the price.

In a bid to combat the deadly problem of drunk drivers on the roads, researchers have been working on ways vehicles can detect a driver's blood alcohol levels and prevent them from driving. It is a lofty goal, but one that could eventually replace ignition interlock devices, which DUI offenders in Texas are required to have installed after their first conviction.

If successful, the system would be able to screen a person's BAC via one of two approaches. One method would involve a touch sensor which detected alcohol levels through the skin via an infrared scanner. The other approach would be to have sensors mounted in the vehicle which could unobtrusively monitor the blood alcohol content of the driver's breath.

While this new technology may help to combat drunk driving in the future, it is still a huge concern in Texas, and too many people are harmed every year as a result. If you or a loved one have been involved in such an accident, you may be wondering where to turn. Fortunately, an attorney might be able to help you. He or she can evaluate your case and may be able to assist you with pursuing the justice and compensation you deserve.
