Passenger killed in Texas car chase

At one time, you may have told a loved one that you aren't worried about his or her driving, but you are worried about the actions of other drivers. This concern also applies when a loved one is a passenger in a reckless driver's vehicle.  That appears to have been the reality for a young woman who was recently killed in Travis County.

The fatal accident reportedly happened in the pre-dawn hours of March 2. A member of the local sheriff's patrol claims to have witnessed a car's speed exceed 100 miles per hour. A chase ensued, and even while travelling at 115 miles per hour, the patrol officer reportedly couldn't catch up with the car.

Authorities say that during the pursuit, the driver blew through a red light and almost collided with another vehicle. The patrol officer caught up with the car only after it hit a utility pole and careened into a field.

The driver, a 26-year-old man, suffered injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, but his passenger, a 28-year-old woman, died at the scene. The driver was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter.

For a grieving family, the emotional strain of such an event is bound to supersede any financial worries. However, in many cases, the cost of making arrangements after a death can be overwhelming, especially if the deceased leaves behind children.

When a driver’s recklessness results in the death of a passenger, the family of the deceased should be aware of their right to seek legal justice beyond criminal court. A civil claim of wrongful death may be the best way to hold a wrongdoer fully accountable.
