Wrong place, wrong time

The risk of a car accident is always with you when you drive. Whether you are diving from Houston to El Paso or Amarillo or down the street to the grocery store, no matter how careful a driver you are, you cannot control the actions of others. If you are stopped at an intersection and a vehicle comes screaming around a corner and loses control, what chance do you have at avoiding a crash?

If you are like a young man from Baytown last year, you have no chance. His friend was giving him a ride home from work. They were waiting at an intersection. What they couldn't know, was that a man and a women had stolen some bedding from a nearby mall, and the police were called. The police located their pickup truck and attempted to stop the driver.

The driver evaded the police and speed away, and the police gave chase. The driver of the pickup truck continued driving in and out of traffic and when the pickup attempted to turn the corner at the intersection where the two teen-age boys waited, he lost control and stuck their Focus, causing both vehicles to catch fire.

The one young man died and the other was injured in this car accident. This week, the driver of the pickup truck was convicted of murder. According to news reports, he could be sentenced from five to 99 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

There is also a civil suit against the police department for initiating the chase. The case serves as a reminder that driving is the most dangerous thing you do every day.
