What to do after a car accident in Texas

Texas is a large state offering many destinations. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy the state's coastline, big cities and college towns. For those who choose to drive through the state to enjoy these offerings, it is important to have a basic understanding of the steps that should be taken if involved in a car accident.

Insurance professionals with StateFarm have a list of recommendations, including taking steps to prepare for an accident before it even happens. If possible, have a set of bright orange cones or warning flares in your trunk. It's also a good idea to have any pertinent medical information written down. Place this information in the glove compartment, purse or wallet in case you are injured in the accident.

After the accident happens, take a moment to survey the situation. Are you injured? Are any of your passengers injured? Was anyone in the other vehicle injured? Deal with any injuries before moving on to address property damage and call an ambulance if needed.

After dealing with injuries, make sure the vehicle is out of the way of oncoming traffic. Use the flares or cones if you have them and contact the police. Finally, notify insurance.

If the accident was caused by a negligent driver, the driver may held liable for any injuries that result. Negligence can be established in many ways, including proof of disobeying traffic laws, like speeding or driving intoxicated, and the presence of distractions like texting or talking on a cell phone.

If you are injured in a car accident, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer to discuss your legal options.
