With cars, you can never be too careful

We like to think of cars in many ways, as something that can get us from Houston to Galveston, as a high-tech living room with all the latest electronic devices, to a projection of our image. But one thing we should never forget is danger thousands of pounds of steel moving at highway speeds pose, both to us when we are in them and when we are around them.

A story this week from Las Vegas highlights the one danger. Dinners at a Las Vegas restaurant were injured when a man in a speeding car drove over the curb and crashed through the dining area on Monday. Ten people were seriously injured as a result of the motor vehicle accident.

Few people would suspect sitting on a sidewalk restaurant, they were at risk of being injured by a car or truck crashing to their table. The man was of accused of being under the influence of prescription drugs at the time of the crash.

Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem and this crash serves as a reminder that you never know what a driver is thinking or their physical condition. They could on drugs, alcohol or even drowsy from being on the road too many hours.

Another case from Houston last month involved a car that struck one car and then drove up a driveway and into the side of a home. When police arrived, they found the driver was dead from gunshot wounds. The women in the other car was slightly injured, but one can easily imagine a pedestrian could have been struck and killed, had they been unlucky to have been walking by when the car went out of control.
